It is important that you purchase the right size crate for your pet. This means you’re PP pet carrier needs to have enough space for your pet to stand up, turn around in while standing, sit erect and be able to lie down in a natural position. This information is provided as a guide only. Please refer to your airline carrier for more detailed information and approvals.
fig 1. Measuring the length and height of your pet.
fig 2. Measuring the width of your pet.
With reference to Fig 1 and Fig 2 above you will need to gather the following measurements:
- The Length of your Pet (A)
While in standing position run a tape measure from the tip of your pet’s nose to the tip of their rump in a straight line (see measurement A above). Do not include the tail in your measurement.
- Total Height of Your Pet (B) & Length of Your Pets Front Legs (C)
Measure your pet from the bottom of their front paw to the top of their head (B) while they are standing. NOTE It is important you include your pet’s ears in this measurement. This will determine how much height they will need in the crate when standing upright. This is the most important measurement as airline personnel will check that they are able to stand up without having to duck their head.
Next measure the length of one of your pets front legs from bottom of the paw to their chest (C). This helps determine how much room they will need lengthwise to lie down comfortably in the crate.
- Width of your Pet (D)
Measure your pet’s width across the shoulders. This gives an indication of how much room your pet has available to turn around in while in the crate.
- Weight of your Pet
You need to know your pet’s weight as these crates have a maximum weight capacity.
Now that you have gathered all these measurements you are now able to work out what size PP crate you require.
Choosing the Most Appropriate Crate
Using these internal dimensions we can now work out which crate is the most appropriate for your travel needs.
Compare the measurements you gathered with the internal dimensions on the PP range of pet crates as set out below. For a suitable crate length add measurement A plus ½ the measurement taken for leg length (C). For turn around space double the width measurement (D) and add 2cm. Add an additional 2 cm for the height (B) measurement taken. So for example a dog that is 45cm long, has a leg length of 18cm , is 17cm wide at the shoulders and is 45cm high you would have calculated the following measurements:
Crate Length = Measurement A = 45cm + ½ measurement C (9cm) = 54cm Long.
Crate Width = Measurement D = 17cm x 2 + 2cm = 36cm Wide.
Crate Height = Measurement B = 45cm + 2cm = 47cm High.
So from the table below the most appropriate crate is the PP40 (ie dimensions recorded are 54L x 36W x 47H) as the dog in this example fits within that crates overall dimensions. The PP40 dimensions are 69L x 39W x 51H.
Finally check that your pet does not exceed the maximum weight for that crate.
